Rene G. Sagebien was born in Miami and was raised on St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mr. Sagebien received his B.A. degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina in 1990 and received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1995.
After graduating from Hofstra, Mr. Sagebien moved to New York where he worked as in house counsel for large multinational banks and financial services companies, including HSBC Bank, USA, General Re Financial Products, and Deutsche Bank, AG. In New York, Mr. Sagebien’s practice began in energy derivatives trading (i.e. options, futures, swaps) as well as the negotiation of product storage and transportation contracts in the worldwide crude oil and natural gas market. From there, Mr. Sagebien joined the derivatives trading department at Republic National Bank of New York, later HSBC Bank, USA, where he managed all documentation in respect of the bank’s worldwide trading activity in currency and precious metals. From HSBC, Mr. Sagebien joined General Re Financial Products, a AAA rated subsidiary of General Re, a Berkshire Hathaway company. At General Re, Mr. Sagebien managed all trading documentation in respect of fixed income, credit default, equity, currency, total return swaps and similar derivative transactions. Additionally, Mr. Sagebien assisted the trading desk in structuring complex financial transactions, including large scale securitizations. At Deutsche Bank, AG’s New York branch, Mr. Sagebien managed trading documentation for all of the bank’s derivatives trading activities in South America and Mexico.
Mr. Sagebien moved to Miami in the fall of 2002, where he worked in the real estate department of a large downtown law firm for 3 years prior to joining Berman Rennert Vogel & Mandler, P.A. in November of 2005. Mr. Sagebien’s practice focuses on all types of real estate matters with a particular emphasis on commercial real estate financing and development. He has extensive experience in representing developers and lenders in land acquisition, project design, and project development and financing. He is an approved agent for Attorney's Title Insurance Fund, Land America, First American Title Insurance Co., Chicago Title and Ticor Title.
Mr. Sagebien is a member of the Florida Bar, the New York Bar and the New Jersey Bar. Mr. Sagebien is fluent in Spanish and French and has conducted business in both languages.
